TRADITION: Canberra couples creating their own wedding rules.
Steeped in tradition, the wedding ceremony dates back to 2350 B.C. Which means, there’s a lot of tradition to unpack, and you could be forgiven for the decision paralysis when it comes to your own. But here’s the great news - apart from the few sentences that you’re legally obligated to say, you can pick and choose when it comes to tradition.
Here are just a couple of examples of ceremony plot twists that we’ve seen, and love.
Set the stage
Don’t want to feel like you’re the headline act at a concert? Why not arrange your chairs in a circle, and give your adoring fans a 360 degree view of your vows?
If you decide to mingle with your guests before the ceremony, you’re no longer restricted by leaving room for an aisle. Have a look at the environment you’re marrying in, and design your centrepoint around a beautiful tree or view out to the mountains.
Can I get a witness?
Spoilt for choice for your two witnesses? Why not draw them out of a hat during the ceremony? On arrival, hand a raffle ticket to each guest over 18, and randomly draw two out of a hat when the time comes. Talk about lucky door prize!
The people up the front
Do your guests know your wedding party? Why wait until the reception to introduce your best men and women? It’s a great way for your guests to get to know why you’ve chosen these people to stand beside you, and sets the tone for a relaxed ceremony. Also, a great conversation starter later in the day.
The ultimate plot twist
So in love that you just can’t wait? Let’s drop a bomb on your nearest and dearest with a surprise wedding. As long as we’ve lodged your Notice of Intended Marriage one month before your “Engagement Party” or “Totally casual BBQ”, we can pull out the rings and watch their jaws drop.
